Virtual Machines
KVM, OpenStack, Proxmox VE and KubeVirt
Virtualization
We design and operate virtualization platforms on open technology: KVM as the hypervisor, Ceph as storage and, where it fits, VMs and containers on one control plane with KubeVirt.
The challenge
Licence models of proprietary hypervisors change, costs rise, and many applications still need virtual machines. Moving away only works if storage, networking and operations are part of the plan.
What we do
The Linux kernel's own hypervisor as the base: efficient resource use, clean isolation, no licence lock-in.
Virtual machines on Kubernetes, with one lifecycle, network and storage model for VMs and containers.
Private cloud environments with OpenStack and Proxmox VE, including automated provisioning of compute nodes.
Ceph RBD as a highly available backend, NVMe/TCP through NVMe-oF gateways for hypervisors.
PXE/iPXE, MAAS and Packer for reproducible hosts and maintained golden images for VMs.
Servers, NVIDIA GPUs and DPUs (BlueField), SR-IOV, bare-metal asset management across the whole lifecycle.
The path from VMware ESXi and other proprietary platforms to open virtualization, with a migration path and test strategy.
Availability zones, redundant networks and storage, so losing a host never means losing the service.
Approach
Workloads, dependencies, storage and networking of the existing environment.
Hypervisor, storage, networking and operating model of the new platform.
Representative workloads are migrated and validated under load.
Hosts and platform are created automatically and reproducibly.
Workloads move in waves, with a rollback plan.
Monitoring, updates and capacity planning.
